Keti Koti Festival Celebrates Freedom and Remembrance
Amsterdam Commemorates Abolition of Slavery
Annual Event Showcases Food, Music, and Cultural Heritage
On July 1, Amsterdam will host its annual Keti Koti Festival, a celebration of the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Antilles. The festival will feature food, music, and cultural heritage displays, as well as speakers and workshops on the history and legacy of slavery.
Keti Koti, which means "Chains Broken" in the Sranan Tongo language, is a day of remembrance and reflection for the city. It is a time to honor the victims and survivors of slavery and to recommit to the fight against racism and discrimination.
