Bob Newhart, beloved comedian and sitcom star, dies at 91

Newhart rose to fame in the 1960s with his stammering, deadpan delivery

Bob Newhart, the beloved comedian and star of two classic sitcoms that bore his name, died Thursday morning of natural causes, according to a statement from his family.

Newhart was best known for his everyman persona, which he used to great effect in his stand-up comedy routines and in his two sitcoms, "The Bob Newhart Show" (1972-1978) and "Newhart" (1982-1990).

In "The Bob Newhart Show," Newhart played a psychologist who lived in Chicago with his wife, Emily (Suzanne Pleshette). In "Newhart," he played a Vermont innkeeper who was constantly getting into misadventures with his eccentric guests.

Newhart was born in Oak Park, Illinois, on September 5, 1932. He began his career as an accountant, but he soon realized that his true passion was comedy.

Newhart's death is a great loss to the world of comedy. He was a true original, and his work will continue to be enjoyed by generations to come.
